Why Japanese People Look So Shy
It’s common to say that Japanese people are shy. And It’s basically true, but not completely true.
In Japan when we talk with strangers or customers, we always feel that we have to be polite. We need to use polite language towards them.
Do you know that Japanese has mainly two languages? : polite language (Keigo) and casual language (Tame).
Polite language feels like a barrier between me and the other person. So I feel that I’m shy when I use polite language.
However, when you get to know each other, or become friends, you can use casual language like a family or friend. That makes us feel closer to you.
Whenever you first meet someone in Japan, they look like a shy person. But it doesn’t mean that person is innately shy. So Try to know that person little by little!
A Small Tip for Making Friends
Talk to someone who is drunk at Izakaya restaurant! Or, invite someone to drink together!
Drinking is important for Japanese people to break out the barriers between strangers, or even coworkers.
Most Japanese people get drunk easily. ( I get drunk with only one glass of beer lol)
So don’t push them to drink fast. You’ll take care of your friends. haha
